She was minister of culture and science in three socialist governments from 1981 to 1989, then was reappointed to the post in October 1993 after her Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), led by Papandreou, won the latest parliamentary election. Miss Mercouri, whose reported age has ranged from 68 to 71, was the first woman to hold a senior portfolio in a Greek government. "We mourn a woman who through her art and struggles made her name indistinguishable from Greece itself," said Greece's premier, Andreas Papandreou. Melina Mercouri, an actress who gained international renown for her starring role in such pictures as the 1960 film "Never on Sunday" and went on to become a fiery feminist and socialist and a Greek Cabinet minister, died March 6 at a hospital in New York.
